Tropea – the historical town centre
Our visit to the historical centre begins in Largo Villetta, with a historical and geographical overview of the area. Here it is possible to admire the shrine of Our Lady of the Island (Santa Maria dell’Isola), symbol of Tropea and the whole of Calabria, the marina and the beaches stretching from Convento to Passo del Cavaliere.
Offshore in the distance, the volcano Stromboli, the closest of the Aeolian Islands, appears clearly on the horizon and is the protagonist of unforgettable sunsets. From Largo Villetta we move to Piazza Ercole to get to know the ancient institutions of this noble town which never knew feudalism – its University, and the two administrative seats Portercole and Africano . The town hosted a strong aristocracy within its walls whose memory is maintained in the numerous noble buildings with their superb sculpted stone portals.
After that, a visit to the Norman Co-Cathedral, which houses works of great historical and artistic value. Then deeper into the heart of the old town to visit the Chiesa del Gesù, after admiring, in Largo Galluppi, a fourteenth-century chapel and the adjoining Church of San Demetrio. Our walk ends in Largo Ruffa to tell the cruel story which led to the construction of the Convent of Poor Clares in 1261.
