Tour of the Castles of the Poro
Bivona, Pizzo, Vibo Valentia
Calabrian defensive system is a corpus of great dimension. The Italian Institute of Castles recorded 207 castles, 89 inland towers, 157 coastal towers, 93 urban walls and 73 fortified farms in Calabria but, because of the strong seismic activity of the region and for the negligence of the local authorities, 90% of them are classified as ruins.
While most of medieval Calabrian archives have been lost, all over the territory we can find the presence of medieval fortifications.
Among the few undamaged units, we find the Castle of Pizzo, where Gioacchino Murat was imprisoned and executed, and the Norman Castle of Vibo Valentia, seat of the National Archaeological Museum “Vito Capialbi”, which holds, among the archaeological finds from Greek Hipponion, the famous gold leaf, extraordinary evidence of the Pythagorean- Orphic rites of Magna Grecia.
We start with the great ruins of the Castle in Bivona which in 16th century became an important productive site for sugar cane.
