A historical – archaeological tour
TROPEA AND MOUNT PORO
A short car trip to Mount Poro and the village of Zungri to visit the “Sbariati” a village of cave dwellings, an ancient village totally hewn out of the rock. It has a very elaborate network of alleys and little streets and an excellent water system. Many caves were dug out for housing purposes and others for sheltering farm animals and local agricultural produce.
After that our trip takes us to the ghost town of Papaglionti, where relics of the past with significant historical value nestle amongst the ruins. The last leg of our trip is a visit to the “Grotta di Trisulina”, a witness to the Roman presence in the area of Mount Poro, and source of mysterious and charming legends.
An optional lunch can be enjoyed in the historical centre of Tropea based on typical family recipes and dishes.

We had a fantastic tour with Marianna to some hidden places next to Tropea. We saw the caves in Zungri, the abandoned town Papaglionti and the fashinating cave of Trisulina under the old roman villa. Marianna is a very engaged and passionated guide and we really appreciated her stories and knowledge of her country. We really recomened her as a guide if you want to know more about the beauty of Calabria!
